The 2019 Pier 60 Sugar Sand Festival
The Sugar Sand Festival is affiliated with an everyday soiree, Sunsets at Pier 60, which we’ve profiled here at the Cabana Breeze before. The 17 days of the festival expand on the considerable fun of that daily experience. It’s a blast for the entire family, and yours to enjoy at 1 Causeway Blvd., just a few minutes south of Hotel Cabana.
The centerpiece of the Sugar Sand Festival is the 21,000-square-foot Sugar Sand Walk Exhibit, which displays an array of jaw-dropping sand sculptures created by top-tier beachside artists.
Along those sand masterworks will be the sculptures built during the festival as part of its Master Sand Sculpting Contest, which will see seven outstanding artists competing. For a small donation—which’ll go to Clearwater’s Sandy Lane Elementary School—you can cast a vote for your favorite to help determine the winner.
Other Activities & Attractions at the Pier 60 Sugar Sand Festival
A host of free, family-friendly activities and entertainment on the beach round out the Pier 60 Sugar Sand Festival. These include a kids’ play area—the popular Giant Sandbox—as well as bounce houses, waterslides, and other delights. Each day at 2 PM (and also at 11 AM on Saturdays), you can try your own hand at beachfront artistry with free sand-sculpting classes (carving tools provided).
Yet more sand-sculpting action will take center stage during the competitive Speed Sand Demos, held each Saturday and Sunday of the festival at 4 PM.
Arts-and-crafts vendors, lots of live music, and nightly seaside movies at Sunset Cinema are also on tap for the proceedings. At 9 PM on festival Saturdays (April 13th, 20th, and 27th), fireworks will flare up the seaside sky.
Among the other events going down during the Sugar Sand Festival are the Sugar Sand Cornhole Tournament (Saturday, April 13th at10 AM) and the YMCA Kids Fishing Rodeo (Saturday, April 27th from 9 to 11 AM).
You’ll be able to wet your whistle with local craft beer, cider, and hard seltzer at Shepard’s Sand Bar; bottled water and soda will also be available. Food won’t be hard to come by given the many restaurants and bars adjoining Pier 60, and vendors on site will be selling some tasty desserts.
